What Is a Slabbed Coin?

A coin encapsulated in a tamper-evident holder by a professional grading service.

"Slabbed" is the colloquial term for a coin that has been professionally graded and encapsulated in a tamper-evident plastic holder by NGC or PCGS.

The Slab

The holder ("slab") consists of:

  • A sonically sealed, clear plastic case
  • A label identifying the coin, grade, and certification number
  • Security features to prevent tampering

Advantages of Slabbed Coins

  • Guaranteed authenticity and grade
  • Physical protection from handling damage
  • Easy to verify via online certification lookup
  • Higher resale confidence and value

Raw vs. Slabbed

"Raw" coins (not graded) can be excellent values if you have expertise. Slabbed coins carry a premium for the grading service but eliminate uncertainty. For significant purchases, slabbed coins from NGC or PCGS are strongly recommended.
