American Gold Eagle 1 oz coin
U.S. Mint22 KaratIRA EligibleSince 1986

Overview

First struck by the U.S. Mint in 1986, the American Gold Eagle carries a storied legacy rooted in American history. Its obverse features Augustus Saint-Gaudens' iconic Lady Liberty striding forward with torch and olive branch — widely regarded as one of the most beautiful coin designs ever created. The reverse depicts a family of eagles, symbolizing strength and unity.

The 22-karat composition — alloyed with silver and copper — gives the Eagle exceptional durability and a distinctive warm color that pure gold coins lack. Despite being 22K, each coin contains the full stated weight of pure gold (e.g., exactly 1 troy ounce in the 1 oz version).

Investment Considerations

  • Liquidity: Universally recognized and traded worldwide. Extremely easy to buy and sell.
  • Premiums: Moderate premiums over spot price due to high demand and U.S. Mint production costs.
  • Fractional Sizes: The 1/10 oz and 1/4 oz options make gold accessible at lower price points.
  • Resale: Strong secondary market — dealers everywhere know and trust this coin.

Legal Status

The American Gold Eagle is legal tender in the United States and is one of the few 22K coins specifically permitted for inclusion in precious metals retirement accounts by federal statute.
