Type I (1986–2021)

The original design featured Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty on the obverse and Miley Busiek’s “Family of Eagles” — a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and hatchlings — on the reverse.

Type II (2021–Present)

The redesigned reverse, created by Jennie Norris, features a close-up portrait of a single eagle. The obverse Lady Liberty design was also refreshed with enhanced details and an added anti-counterfeiting reeded edge variation.

Key Differences

Which Should You Buy?

Both types contain identical gold content. For pure investment purposes, either type serves equally well. For collectors, the 2021 vintage is particularly noteworthy as the only year both types were produced — making the 2021 Type I a potential collectible as the final year of the original design.
