History
Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt and introduced in 1907 as part of President Roosevelt’s coinage beautification program, the Indian Head Eagle was controversial from the start. Its incuse (sunken) design was a radical departure from traditional raised-relief coinage. Critics worried the recessed surfaces would harbor germs; collectors found the design revolutionary.
