History
Designed by James B. Longacre, the Liberty Head Double Eagle was first struck in 1849, the year of the California Gold Rush. It was produced continuously until 1907, when it was replaced by the Saint-Gaudens design. These coins financed the Civil War, built the transcontinental railroad, and fueled the Gilded Age.
