The field of numismatics is vast. Successful collectors typically choose a focus:
Type Collection:: One example of each major design (Liberty Head, Saint-Gaudens, Indian Head, etc.)
Date Collection:: Every year of a particular series
Mint Mark Collection:: Examples from each mint (Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, Carson City, New Orleans)
Grade Set:: The same coin in progressively higher grades
### Set a Budget
Pre-1933 gold is available at every price point:
\$300–\$500:: Quarter Eagles in circulated grades
\$500–\$2,000:: Half Eagles and common-date Eagles
\$2,000–\$5,000:: Common-date Double Eagles in Mint State
\$5,000+:: Key dates, high grades, and rarities

A single coin in exceptional condition will almost always outperform multiple coins in average condition over the long term.
Storage and Preservation
Never clean a coin.: Cleaning destroys value.
