The Sheldon Scale
Coins are graded on the Sheldon scale from 1 to 70:
Why Grading Matters
The difference between grades can mean dramatic price differences. A common-date Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle might be worth:
MS-62:: ~\$2,200
MS-65:: ~\$5,500
MS-67:: ~\$25,000+
NGC vs. PCGS
Both are respected and widely accepted. Coins graded by either service are encapsulated in tamper-evident holders ("slabs") with a unique certification number that can be verified online.
Advice for Buyers
Always buy graded coins from NGC or PCGS for significant purchases
Raw (ungraded) coins carry more risk but can offer value if you develop expertise
Population reports show how many coins of each date and grade exist — useful for evaluating rarity
